General Overview

Located in the Eastern Caribbean just seventeen degrees North of the Equator rests the beautiful country of Antigua. This world famous island and its neighboring island country Barbuda are home to over 360 beaches. It is said that there are enough beaches in this region alone to visit a new one each day of the year. Vacationers are automatically drawn to the naturally warm and inviting waters of Antigua. History

From an early time Antigua was marked as the perfect country for relaxation and trade. This country was settled in 1632 by a group of English travelers and was a successful community for quite some time. First developed by Christopher Codrington several years later, this country was immediately used for sugar cultivation and exportation. As a successful business venture, Antigua began pumping out sugar at a rapid pace with over 150 working windmills. Antigua was run by a fleet of slaves, and the country flourished on its sugar production. Today, Antigua has developed its own culture based on slave traditions of the Africans who had first worked on the island and their traditions have since been molded and shaped by the island.

Important Travel Information

Renting a car may be a smart choice for navigating around Antigua, and can save a traveler a good deal of money. To drive in Antigua, you may obtain a temporary license with a valid driver's license (you may need to show your passport for Antigua) that is good for a 6 month period. For a fee of $20.00(US), drivers can get the license and drive on Antigua roads. You will be happy to know that Antigua drivers drive on the left side just like America, so there wil be no adjustments to make (except of course the changes in road trends traffic flow)

Departure Tax

Antigua requires that a fee of $20.00 (US) is paid in cash at the time of your departure. Some of the airlines that service Antigua will include this fee in the total ticket cost.

Health and Security

IThough vaccinations are not required for entrance and exit of Antigua (your passport for Antigua should be the only document needed), it is recommended that all travelers are up to date on their immunity shots in order to ensure a happy and healthy vacation. Though there is only one major hospital in Antigua, there are several private doctors' offices around the island.

Antigua like all other countries have thieves, so remember to keep your belongings safe and always lock up your car or hotel room before leaving. Keep your passport for Antigua in a safe place, and always stay aware of your surroundings.

What to Pack

Clothes

Travelers are advised to pack lightweight tropical clothing for purposes year-round. After all the country is practically on the equator! Swimwear and shorts are acceptable on the beaches. We advise you to pack a lightweight sweater or comparable garment for evenings in the winter months as it can get cool later on in the day. Laundry services will be available at your resort and throughout the island.

Miscellaneous

Many major credit cards are accepted throughout the country such as Visa, Master Card, Discover, and American Express. Film, camera, sunscreen, hat and beach cover ups. Keep in mind that this country is tropical and appropriate protection from the sun should be considered. Don't forget your passport for Antigua!

Utilities

Voltage: Wall outlets vary and Antigua as some are 220 volts like European countries, and some use 110 vaults just like the United States. You can ask for adapters at the resorts if they do not provide both in their rooms.

Water: Though it may not taste like what you are used to, you are free to drink the water in Antigua.

Transportation

To save time and money, many travelers prefer to rent a vehicle instead of taking taxis wherever they want to go. Keep in mind that traveling in this manner may be quite different than your own country. Always stay alert and watch out for cattle and wild animals. Renting a car prior to your arrival can save you time and money. You will need to show your driver's license and passport for Antigua as well as provide a $20.00 fee for a temporary license.

Jamaican Taxis have predetermined rates between one location and another. All cabs require a red PPV plates (Public Passenger Vehicle) along with regular license plates, so don't trust cars and vans that do not have this. Limousines, air-conditioned coaches and local bus services connect all villages, cities and towns.

By Rental Car

If you are expecting to rent a car, keep in mind that in Jamaica you drive on the left. The speed limit is 30 MPH in towns and 50 MPH on highways. To rent any vehicle, visitors may use a drivers license (valid for 12 months) for up to a 3-month period. Drivers must be at least 25 years of age to rent a car and must provide a deposit in order to meet insurance regulations. This payment may be made with cash, major credit card, or travelers checks. Service stations are open daily and will only accept cash.

Marriage Document Information

There are several documents that are required for a legal wedding in Antigua: Passport from country of origin Decree Absolute (for previously divorced groom and or bride), Death Certificate (for previously widowed groom and or bride) ,Deed Poll (for bride or groom with a name change), If under 18 parental consent (sworn affidavit verified by notary public).

Restrictions and Fees

The fee for a normal marriage license is EC$100; for a special marriage license, the fee is US$150. There is an EC$100 registrar fee and an US$100 fee for any wedding not taking place at the courthouse. Applications are made at the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs in St. John's, which is open Mon-Thu 8:30-4:30 and Fri 8-3.
