History

The history of Bahamas is rich and unique and begins with the ancient Indian tribes that first inhabited the island. The Siboney Indians are the oldest race of Indians that can be traced back to these islands. Ancient ruins prove that this people group was somehow destroyed, and the Arawak Indians came to take their place some time later. Though Columbus was the one who discovered the Islands of the Bahamas for the Spanish, this was more of a curse than a blessing. Spanish ships were often overtaken by the natives of this region as the trade industry grew and Spanish ships were more and more prevalent in these waters.

Later on in the 18th century, American loyalists began settling plantations in the Bahamas for cotton harvesting. Home to over forty plantations, the Bahamas were inhabited by twelve hundred plus slaves. Once the prohibition era ended and the economy in America began to plummet, and fishing became a more viable trade than cotton. The natives are proud of the history of Bahamas and host many exhibits for showing off the island's history to new residents and travelers. Important Travel Information

If you are looking to rent a car during your stay on the Bahamian island of your choice there are some things you are going to need to keep in mind. First, the steering wheel is on the left for most vehicles, but so are the roads. Drivers drive on the left side of the road throughout the islands of the Bahamas. You can obtain a temporary license by showing your passport for Bahamas and there is a small fee for this three month license. Rental car facilities are present throughout the Bahamas in all areas that are populated.

Sangster International Airport

Montego Bay Airport (Sangster International) is the primary point of entry for most tourists. It's the most reliable point of entrance if you're traveling to Montego Bay, Ocho Rios or Negril. This airport has international terminals as well as domestic terminals for local flights that depart regularly to Kingston, Negril, Port Antonio and Ocho Rios. You can also find taxis, hotel shuttles and car rental companies to assist in reaching your final destination.

Norman Manley International Airport

If you're visiting the capital city, Port Antonio or heading to the Blue Mountains the airport located in Kingston (Norman Manley International) would be your best option for traveling into the country. Ground transportation can be arranged to take you to the domestic airport in Kingston or Tinson Pen, where flights are available to other parts of the island. Car rental, taxis and tour operators are located in the Arrivals Ground Transportation Hall to help visitors get to their destination.

Important Travel Information

Departure Tax

Jamaica's departure tax is due upon leaving the country, and is payable in cash at the airport before your returning flight. Currently, the tax is JA$1000 or US$27.00. Cruise ship passengers also are subject to a departure tax of US$15.00. For most airlines, your departure tax will be included in the price of the ticket.

Health and Security

Vaccinations are not required to enter the country. The only exception to this is for travelers who have in the last 6 weeks visited: Asia, Africa, Central and South America, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Trinidad or Tobago.

Most of the Country's hospitals are located in Kingston, but there are several that can be found throughout Jamaica.

What to Pack

Clothes

Travelers are advised to pack lightweight tropical clothing for purposes year-round. Swimwear and shorts are acceptable on the beaches. We advise you to pack a lightweight sweater or comparable garment for evenings in the winter months as it can get cool later on in the day. Laundry and dry cleaning facilities are available throughout the country and in many resorts.

Miscellaneous

Many major credit cards are accepted throughout the country such as Visa, Master Card, Discover, and American Express. Film, camera, sunscreen, hat and beach cover ups. Keep in mind that this country is tropical and appropriate protection from the sun should be considered. Don't forget your passport for Jamaica!

Utilities

Voltage: 110 volts/50 cycles is standard. 220 volts used at some hotels. Adaptors are available at some hotels, although hair dryers and irons work without adapters.

Water: All drinking water in Jamaica is purified and filtered by modern methods.

Transportation

By Cab

Jamaican Taxis have predetermined rates between one location and another. All cabs require a red PPV plates (Public Passenger Vehicle) along with regular license plates, so don't trust cars and vans that do not have this. Limousines, air-conditioned coaches and local bus services connect all villages, cities and towns.

By Rental Car

If you are expecting to rent a car, keep in mind that in Jamaica you drive on the left. The speed limit is 30 MPH in towns and 50 MPH on highways. To rent any vehicle, visitors may use a drivers license (valid for 12 months) for up to a 3-month period. Drivers must be at least 25 years of age to rent a car and must provide a deposit in order to meet insurance regulations. This payment may be made with cash, major credit card, or travelers checks. Service stations are open daily and will only accept cash.

View the excitement from a safe point on the terrace while getting a front row show of the more daring travelers. Most tours include transfers and admission.

Horseback Riding

This popular choice of the attractions in Jamaica allows you to feel the wind in your face while riding down the sandy beaches. Enjoy the beauty of the mountains while soaring along the trails. This activity is available in several locations throughout the island.

Rick's Cafe

Of all the restaurant attractions in Jamaica you have to visit Rick's Café. This favorite spot features gorgeous sun set views with a perfect setting to watch the local divers plunge from the Negril cliffs.

Deep Sea Fishing

Dolphin Cove

ATV Safari

Start out your trip with a ful-action ATV Safari. Beginning at the Rose Hall Estate, located on the north coast, your safari begins with a short safety and tour briefing, followed by a demonstration on the use of the bikes. After you have donned your helmet and are comfortable in the practice ring, you are ready to start on your fully guided journey to the 700 feet above sea level to the beautiful Mount Zion.

Marriage Document Information

The wedding documents process for your wedding in Jamaica is made easy with our team of document specialists to lead you through to the end. Though each island has its own requirements, your destination wedding professional will be there to answer your questions and keep you informed of the current rules and regulations. Though this process can be slightly more involved than a wedding at your home country, a wedding in Jamaica is well worth the wait when you are saying "I do" surrounded by lush tropical trees and crystal blue oceans.

In most island circumstances you will need the following:

(1) State issued birth certificate with father's name on it.

(2) All pages of the court certified final divorce decree if applicable.

(3) Legal name changes or legal adoptions papers if applicable.

(4) State issued death certificates with related marriage certificates, if applicable.

Very Important About Documents

Your legal documents must either be in English or legally translated into English. All translated documents must be from a certified translator with letterhead, stamp and seal from the translator's office. No documents will be returned to couples and should be mailed via a courier service so documents can be tracked. Passports are NOT accepted. Please mail notarized copies of documents to the Wedding Office at least 60 days prior to your arrival date at the resort.

Restrictions and Fees

Visitors can say their vows within just 24 to 48 hours after arriving in Jamaica. Most resorts require a 48 hour waiting period for a destination wedding. Applying prior to arrival will ensure the obtaining of a marriage license.

The cost of a license is approximately US$75–US$80.
