This island was a very valuable as it proved to be a resource for gold, and was soon settled by European travelers. The Europeans transformed the island's inhabitants (the Taino Indians) into slaves for their work purposes, and soon after the entire race of the Taino were extinct. The western regions of the island were taken over by the French in the late 1600s, and that portion of the island became the nation of Haiti.
