This small and beautiful island is located just North of Barbados, and is just twenty seven miles long and fourteen miles wide. The Atlantic Ocean surrounds it eastern coast as the Caribbean sea touches its western waters. Rich rainforests envelope the majority of its terrain with fruit trees ranging from banana and coconut to mango and papaya trees, making St Lucia an enticing spot for a Caribbean vacation.

History

It is thought that Christopher Columbus had discovered this Island on St Lucy's day in 1502. Though there is evidence of ancient settlements the full history of this small island is not quite known. Settlers from England were sent out in 1605 and mixed with the "Caribs" that had been inhabiting the island. Later on, French settlers started up several colonies in the area and are responsible for the intermingling of cultures that is present to this day. Though sugar was its original export, in the early nineteen hundreds, bananas and cocoa became increasingly produced from this island.

Entry Requirements

Visitors must hold a valid passport for St. Lucia, except for citizens of the United and Canada. Citizens of US and CA are granted access into the country after proving identification and citizenship with a birth certificate and government issued photo ID. These regulations are subject to change.

Airports and Airlines

Hewanorra Airport (UVF)

Located in Vieux Fort, Hewanorra Airport is the choice for arriving and departing flights for international travel. Most visitors will use this airport for their entrance into the country, and is near many St Lucia resorts.

George Charles (Vigie/SLU)

George Charles is situated right outside of Castries. This airport is the location for all flights from within the Caribbean.

Important Travel Information

If you are traveling from America you will be happy to know that driving is on the same side (left side) so there will be no awkwardness at the wheel. Many visitors choose to rent a car to drive around the island and St Lucia resorts, and can easily get one for an average of $65.00 US per day.

Departure Tax

All visitors are required to pay a departure tax of $21.00 US in cash upon leaving. Credit cards are not a valid form of payment for departure tax.

Health and Security

Though the island and St Lucia resorts are relatively safe, you will still be advised to lock up your rental car and room where you are staying.

Immunizations are not required to enter this country but you are encouraged to stay up to date with normal vaccinations. If for any reason you run into a health concern during your stay you will be happy to know that there are three good hospitals in the country, and several general practices. What to Pack

Travelers are advised to pack lightweight tropical clothing for purposes year-round. Swimwear and shorts are acceptable on the beaches. We advise you to pack a lightweight sweater or comparable garment for evenings in the winter months as it can get cool later on in the day. Laundry and dry cleaning facilities are available throughout the country and in many St Lucia resorts.

Miscellaneous

Many major credit cards are accepted throughout the country such as Visa, Master Card, Discover, and American Express. Film, camera, sunscreen, hat and beach cover ups. Keep in mind that this country is tropical and appropriate protection from the sun should be considered. Don't forget your passport for St Lucia!

Currancy

The Eastern Caribbean dollar is the currency used throughout St Lucia and St Lucia resorts.

Utilities

Voltage: Most outlets in St. Lucia use 220 volts with 50 cycles AC. You will need to bring an adapter if you live in the United States or Canada.

Water: All drinking water in Jamaica is purified and filtered by modern methods.

Transportation

Instead of renting taxis throughout your stay, you may want to save time and money by loking into renting a car for a least part of your visit to the St Lucia resorts. While there are plenty of taxis available on the island, rates can be steep. Look into reservations before you arrive to St. Lucia to avoid scheduling issues.

Marriage Document Information

The following documentation must be reviewed prior to the marriage ceremony:

Passport from country of residence, Birth Certificate, Deed Poll (if bride or groom has undergone a name change), Decree Absolute (if bride and or groom was previously divorced), and Death Certificate (in the event that the bride and or groom is widowed).

Restrictions and Fees

Those who are under the age of 18 must prove parental consent with a sworn affidavit stamped by notary public with that parents' signature. All required papers that are not in English, must have an authenticated translation.

The marriage license must be applied for at least seven days before the ceremony, and costs $335.00 (EC). This process may be expedited with an additional fee.
