The first natives of the islands of Turks and Caicos were the Taino Indians. It is said the Columbus first set foot on these islands before any of his other discoveries. In the early 1500s, the race of the Taino Indians began to be persecuted by slavery and disease from the Europeans settling on the Islands. The Tainos were all but extinct by the mid 1600s. Much controversy was had over this chain of islands, as its ownership jumped back and forth between French, British, and Spanish reign.
For quite some time, these beautiful islands were uninhabited, until the Bahamas claimed the islands in 1799. Finally, the residents of Turks and Caicos began to grow, and adapted policies and government of its own until it was ultimately claimed as a separate Crown Colony of Britain in the early 1970s. It wasn't until the mid 1980s that Turks and Caicos began to be a popular destination for travel. This desire from travelers came as the first resorts were built in the main strip of islands.
