General Overview - Turks and Caicos

Made up of forty separate islands and cays, Turks and Caicos is a wonderful destination for couples and families that want a more private vacation in the beautiful Caribbean. The third-largest coral reef system on in the entire world is one of Turks and Caicos many assets. The immaculate beaches Turks has to offer are lined with smooth white sand are one of its many draws. Vacationers can enjoy these calm blue waters from many locations in Turks and Caicos. Though only eight of the 40 islands and cays are inhabited, there are many gorgeous hotels, resorts, and attractions in these regions, filled with everything a vacationer might want or need.

Turks and Caicos is a favorite among seasoned travelers who enjoy true adventure, and an in-depth encounter with a tropical paradise. The most popular island (and the most frequented by travelers) is Providenciales Island. The island was chosen for its unique land features, stunning coastal views, and unbeatable spots for relaxing by the calm waters. This main area is a great location to begin your travels in Turks and Caicos, and has tons of beaches, resorts, hotels, restaurants, and shopping. Grace Bay Beach is one of Providenciales most popular places. With a quiet and serene feel, Grace Gray Beach offers boating and sailing while faster water sports like skiing are off limit.

Venture outside of the hotel areas and stroll the shore line at Long Bay Beach. These shallow waters and waveless seas make for a perfect wading, walking, and picnicking area. Climb up on horseback and ride the beaches Turks style on a beautiful trail ride. For outdoor activity lovers, the terrain at Malcolm beach is ideal. With endless roads and paths to ride 4x4s and ATVs, Malcolm beach is a favorite for power sport fans. These are just some of the hundreds and hundreds of beach locations, islands, and cays in Turks and Caicos, each one offering a unique experience, and unforgettable surroundings.

History

The first natives of the islands of Turks and Caicos were the Taino Indians. It is said the Columbus first set foot on these islands before any of his other discoveries. In the early 1500s, the race of the Taino Indians began to be persecuted by slavery and disease from the Europeans settling on the Islands. The Tainos were all but extinct by the mid 1600s. Much controversy was had over this chain of islands, as its ownership jumped back and forth between French, British, and Spanish reign.

For quite some time, these beautiful islands were uninhabited, until the Bahamas claimed the islands in 1799. Finally, the residents of Turks and Caicos began to grow, and adapted policies and government of its own until it was ultimately claimed as a separate Crown Colony of Britain in the early 1970s. It wasn't until the mid 1980s that Turks and Caicos began to be a popular destination for travel. This desire from travelers came as the first resorts were built in the main strip of islands. Today, the beaches Turks and Caicos are still of the less explored destinations, and more private areas to travel, but continues to grow and expand as time goes on. Enjoy the quiet beaches and attentive resort locations while soaking up the diverse culture of Turks and Caicos Islands.
